By now you’ve probably heard the term, “Cloud Wars”, though with so many fronts sometimes it’s difficult to ascertain which Cloud battles are being referenced. In The Battle for the Enterprise the reference is to cloud computing leaders making their way into the enterprise segment taking market share from the legacy IT providers. Others may be referring to the Oracle and SAP acquisition shootout or the CRM Cloud Wars. For our purposes, the “Cloud War” discussion will revolve around storage. There has been a lot of news coverage around the battle being played out between Microsoft SkyDrive and iCloud, and news of Google entering the fray with it’s Google Drive (aka G-Drive) competing with a Dropbox like file service. Other players include Box.net, Sugar Sync, Syncplicity, and iFolder to name but a few. This battlefield is rich and complex, so last week, I called upon... (more)

ADF Takeaways from Oracle Open World 2011

With the huge amount of sessions at Oracle Open World, it’s often hard to find the little gems of information amongst all the marketing. This is true of ADF like all other technologies at the conference, there’s simply a lot of information to digest and filter. Luckily Oracle publishes the presentations PPTs afterwards and it’s possible to find a jewel or two in all the content with some careful searching. For the ADF developers among us, this blog post attempts to summarize some of the main ADF takeaways from Oracle Open World 2011. Please remember this is my summary, not Oracle’s (I am not an Oracle employee), and Oracle publishes all of this content under the Safe Harbor statement which means they cannot be held to anything they published. All the links in this post are not guaranteed to be up forever as Oracle may remove them in the near future. I suggest if you'r... (more)

REST Security at JavaOne

I'm speaking with Vikas Jain from Oracle at JavaOne (co-located with Oracle Open World this year) on the topic of REST Security. The session link is below: http://www.eventreg.com/cc250/sessionDetail.jsp?SID=314100 (or go to the main catalog page and paste the Session ID 314100 into the search form). We'll be talking about threats and countermeasures for REST Web Services. We will also discuss the various REST authentication schemes being used by Cloud service providers today. Some of these authentication schemes (in particular that used by Amazon Web Services) is as close to an "industry standard" for REST authentication as we have now. Saw what you like about the WS-Security bloat, but at least it is an open standard, whereas for REST authentication there isn't one yet (unless you count HTTP Auth). But organizations realize that they can gain an advantage by providing ... (more)
